July 2020 - New Rotary Year Begins

The Rotary Club of Simi Sunset is a group of leaders that meets regularly to form bonds and friendships. We strive to improve lives locally and around the world.
President's Message

What a crazy year it has been getting through being a PE. We went from everything in person to Zoom. To say that this is not how I expected this year to go would be an understatement. There have been so many negatives that I could easily overlook the positives but I will not. I have been lucky enough to volunteer at the Senior Center and the Samaritan Center. I was also able to experience district
conference with a great group of people from my club. Did I miss out of some things because of the pandemic? Yes, but I was also able to get some incredible family time. I cooked a lot and made even more bread. As bad as it could be I was able to find the good in most of what was there.

Now as I come into my year as president I am starting to feel the excitement of all the possibilities that I will be able to bring to light. I am told often that it will be a weird year and I like that. No other president had to go through a year like the one I get to have. Being completely virtual and hopefully moving into a hybrid meeting style excites me. The hope that in my year I may be able to bring us back to a full in person meeting style is even more exciting. COVID-19 has been rough on everyone but I look at my club and see a group that has what it takes to overcome and come out the other side stronger.

I have always been taught to do something right you need to follow K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). My goals follow this rule for the year… Get everyone involved and have fun. With these 2 vary simple goals we will get the club engaged again doing the things that brought them to Rotary in the first place. Monthly socials where possible. Community events when allowed. Fellowship daily.

It will be a great year,
Mark Lowry

Jason Peplinski - Simi Valley Unified School District

Dr. Jason Peplinski is the Superintendent for the Simi Valley Unified School District. He came to talk to us about the school year 2020-2021 during the pandemic. This was a very important meeting to attend for so many of our club members that have children or family members attending school. Dr. Peplinksi and his staff are working very hard to answer many parents' concerns over how they will continue schooling. So far they have several options that they are weighing. With changes in regulations happening every day, it seems Dr. Peplinski and his staff are always on top of communications to families with new updates. Thank you Dr. Peplinksi for all you are doing!
New Member Proposal
A new member was proposed to the board of directors during the June meeting.

Jill Haney proposed Marin Kakachev.

The board of directors approved the proposal.

Robert Brill, Deputy Chief at Simi Valley Police Department came to educate us on the precautions that the Simi police are using to keep both the public and the officers safe during the COVID 19 pandemic. He also informed us about the local protests and rallies that have peacefully occurred here with the cooperation of the attendees and the police.
Allocations Meeting 2020

We had a great turnout for one of the best meetings of the year... Our Allocations Meeting!

By the end of the Rotary Year (June 30th), our club donates all the funds we have raised from our events to local organizations and charities. This is what Simi Sunset is about--giving back to our community. We invite representatives from each organization that will receive our donation to present a small speech about what their organization does and how our donation helps.

Some of the organizations that we donated to this year:

BACA (Biker's Against Child Abuse)
Free Clinic of Simi Valley
Moorpark College foundation
Royal High School Wrestling Team
Moorpark College Athletics
